About The Masters of Minimally Invasive Surgery.

The Masters of Minimally Invasive Surgery is a one year course which includes three major components Theory, Research, and Clinical Practice. Robotics is an important component of MIS. The MMIS course in 2024 will increase its emphasis on the theory and practical application of robotic assisted surgery.

Theory

This is comprised of four quadmesters of work. You will complete each course by reviewing the topic material that is presented to you and completing assignments as indicated. Assignments must be completed prior to 18:00 on the day before the relevant online tutorial for that topic. Failure to do so will result in a zero mark for that assignment. There will be a online tutorial each week which  are active discussions designed to allow a variety of views to be heard and debated. Guest lecturers will be present at some of the tutorials. Your participation in these discussions will be assessed and satisfactory marks are required for completion of the quadmester. There will be an examination of the topics content at the end of each quadmester.

Research

This is comprised of four quadmesters of work. In Quadmester 1 you will complete topics on research methods and research ethics. You will be required to identify the research project that you wish to complete for the Masters course and have a final ethics approval form actually submitted to your local ethics committee. Failure to do this will result in failure of this quadmester. In the Research 1 module you will find an excellent collection of articles which describe how to assess a surgical journal article.

Quadmester 2, 3 & 4 will comprise executing your project, collating the results and writing it in a form that is suitable for publication in a peer reviewed journal. You will be able to submit your completed research project at any time prior to the end of term 4.

Clinical Practice

There are three sections to this component: Clinical experience, Online robotic surgery training via the Da Vinci website and clinical immersion weekends . All must be completed to pass this module.

Clinical Experience: You are required to have a satisfactory report from your nominated clinical supervisor as per RACS guidelines. You will also need to submit a logbook of MIS procedures verified by your clinical supervisor by signature.

Da Vinci website. Certificate proof of online learning.

Clinical Immersion Weekends: There will be four immersion weekends which are positioned at the end of each quadmester. At these weekends you will improve your operative skills. Attendance at each of these weekends is compulsory. Failure to attend will result in a fail for Clinical Practice for the term.

Testimonials

I have certainly gained a deeper appreciation of MIS. As a result I have also changed my way of thinking and approach to practice in several areas, which is great.

The practical sessions are a particular highlight. Simon K. 2021

I have taken to adjusting the set-up of the operating theatre as a result of the sessions on ergonomics and heuristics and routinely point this out to trainee registrars when I work with them

The immersion weekends have been fantastic and very valuable. Tim G.2021
